Who is the BEST basketball player in your city, state, and country?

WHY WE STILL DON'T KNOW, AND WHY THAT'S ABOUT TO CHANGE

Do you KNOW who is the best basketball player in the world? Notice, I didn’t ask, “Who do you think is the best?” Nor am I asking which team is the best. I’m talking about the one basketball player who, right now, is better than all the other players alive on earth. Does anyone know who and where that player is?

Basketball was invented in 1891. It’s been over 100 years since then. The popularity of the game has grown. Today we have millions of players and thousands of leagues. It’s even an Olympic sport. Still, no one has ever answered the question.

Why is that? Well it’s actually pretty simple. To answer the question I have asked, you would need four keys. I’ll tell you what they are.

The Four Keys

1. The Mission. A mission is simply a decision to do something. When a company, an organization or a basketball league establishes its mission, that’s them saying, “This is our goal. This is where we’re going. This is what we’re doing.”

Now finding the best basketball player in the world is a complex task that would require a massive coordinated effort involving millions of people. It would require an intricately designed system that is so well planned, so well executed that it could never be done on accident. The creation of such a system would have to have been your intention starting out. It would have to be your mission. Before any basketball league can find the best player in the world, they must first make the firm decision and commitment to do so.

2. The Method (the objective standard). Once you’ve decided to answer the question, the next thing you’re going to need is to establish the objective standard. That is a fair, reliable, and effective way to evaluate players. With this standard you could accurately measure any and every player and state how good they are. Without such a standard you’re left with what we see in all the online GOAT debates. They can argue to the point of sweat and tears and never arrive at a definitive answer. You cannot determine what is good, better or best without first establishing what that is in the first place. One person thinks it’s stats. Another thinks it’s championships. And on and on.

3. The Format (the event). Once you’ve decided your mission is to find the answer to the question, and you’ve found the method, the next thing you’ll need is the format. Let’s get one thing straight. A team format can only reveal the best team. To determine the best player you absolutely MUST have the correct format, which is 1v1. The only way to tell who is better between any two players is to have them play 1v1.

Format also means event. Every league has that one final event that determines its champion. The Olympics have the Gold Medal Game. The NBA has the Finals, The NCAA has the championship game, and so on. So there would have to be an event that determines who is the best player.

4. The Capacity. Any league that would attempt to answer the question would have to have a roster spot for every player in the world. Every player must have the opportunity to compete. Otherwise you’re left with what we see in the USA, where a league that doesn’t even have a team representing every state, still calls its champion a world champion. If the world is not competing, then you can’t call your champion a world champion.

“They Never Will”

Now I’m going to show you something very interesting. Let’s look at the most prominent basketball leagues to see how many of them have the four keys to answering the question.

The Mission (the decision). Which of these organizations has made the decision that it will be the one who answers the question? Not the NBA. Not the Olympics. Not the NCAA. Not Fiba.

The Method (the standard). Which league has established an objective standard for determining who is the best player? Not the NBA. Not the Olympics. Not the NCAA. Not Fiba.

The Format (the event). Which of these leagues has the event that will determine the best player in the world? Again, not the NBA. Not the Olympics. Not the NCAA. Not Fiba.

The Capacity. Which of these leagues provides an opportunity for every player in the world to compete? Not the NBA. Not the Olympics. Not the NCAA. Not Fiba.

And now you see it. This is why, for more than 100 years, no league has answered the question, and why — until they have the mission, the method the format, and the capacity — they never will.

The real tragedy here is the millions of dreams that die unfulfilled. There are superstars who will never be discovered. The best player in your city, in every city, is already there. The best player in every country is already there. The best basketball player on earth is out there somewhere right now, but we will never know who these players are. Even though it is true that these players are indeed the best, they will never be recognized or rewarded until that truth becomes an established fact. And, as we have seen, basketball has never had a league that could establish the fact — until now.

After more than 100 years of obstacles, constraints, and other barriers, basketball has broken free! We can now shout,

FINALLY!

At last! One league has come to answer the question.
